Maitland-Niles Stunner Rescues Everton in 2-2 Draw With Manchester United

Everton produced a dramatic late comeback to hold Manchester United to a 2-2 draw at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday. Ainsley Maitland-Niles marked his Everton debut with a spectacular 96th-minute equaliser, denying United a second Premier League win of the season.

United took the lead immediately after half-time through Bryan Mbeumo. The forward cut inside onto his preferred left foot before firing beyond Jordan Pickford to give Michael Carrick's side the advantage.

Everton responded strongly after falling behind. Tyrique George equalised in the 83rd minute with a superb finish from a narrow angle after Hayden Hackney created the opening. The goal gave David Moyes' side fresh belief after a frustrating first half.

United restored their lead seven minutes later through Benjamin Sesko. The substitute rose to meet Luke Shaw's cross and headed into the net, appearing to have secured all three points for the visitors.

Everton refused to accept defeat, however. With the five minutes of added time already completed, the ball fell to Maitland-Niles outside the box and the summer signing produced a curling long-range strike into the top corner. His first appearance for the club ended with an instant goal-of-the-season contender.

The result was particularly significant for Everton after a turbulent transfer window. The Toffees sold Iliman Ndiaye to Manchester City and Beto to Fiorentina but failed to complete their planned move for Folarin Balogun. The collapse of the £40 million deal left Moyes with Thierno Barry as his only recognised striker.

Jack Grealish's loan arrival and Maitland-Niles' signing provided some late reinforcement, but Everton still have a thin squad. Their ability to fight back against United will therefore offer encouragement as Moyes prepares for a demanding campaign.

For United, the draw will feel like a major setback. Carrick's team had led twice but failed to protect their advantage, continuing a defensive problem after conceding twice in each of their opening three league matches.

The point keeps Everton unbeaten after three matches and moves them onto five points. United remain on four points from their opening three games, with the late collapse leaving Carrick frustrated after his side appeared to have secured victory.
