Maikaba Seeks Fan Support as Bayelsa United Targets Immediate NPFL Return

Newly appointed Bayelsa United head coach Abdu Maikaba has called on the club's supporters to play a key role in the team's quest for an immediate return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Maikaba made the appeal as preparations continue for the 2026/27 Nigeria National League (NNL) season. The experienced tactician was unveiled last week following Bayelsa United's relegation from the NPFL at the end of the 2025/26 campaign.

The former Akwa United and Plateau United coach has been given the responsibility of rebuilding the squad and guiding the Prosperity Boys back to Nigeria's top division. His appointment signals the club's determination to challenge for promotion at the first attempt.

Speaking ahead of the new season, Maikaba stressed that success would depend on the combined efforts of the players, coaching staff, club officials and supporters. He believes the fans can make a significant difference throughout the promotion race.

"The players will give everything on the pitch, but football is always stronger when the supporters become the twelfth man," Maikaba said.

"Together, we can build a winning culture and achieve promotion."

The coach is expected to begin restructuring the squad in the coming weeks as Bayelsa United prepare for what promises to be another demanding NNL campaign. Recruitment and player assessments are likely to form a major part of the club's preseason programme as they seek to assemble a competitive squad.

The Nigeria National League is widely regarded as one of the country's toughest competitions, with several ambitious clubs battling each season for promotion to the NPFL. Consistency, squad depth and strong home performances are expected to play a major role in determining which teams secure promotion.

Bayelsa United will be eager to put the disappointment of last season behind them after dropping out of the top flight. The club has previously shown its ability to compete at the highest level of Nigerian football and will be aiming to restore that status as quickly as possible.
