Maikaba Names Flying Eagles Squad for 2026 WAFU B U20 Championship

Flying Eagles head coach Abdu Maikaba has announced Nigeria's squad for the 2026 WAFU B U20 Championship in Côte d'Ivoire as the defending champions prepare to begin their title defence.

Nigeria will open their Group B campaign against long-time rivals Ghana on Monday at the Lycée Scientifique Stadium in Yamoussoukro. The fixture is expected to be one of the standout matches of the group stage, with both nations aiming to make a strong start in the regional tournament.

Maikaba selected a squad featuring some of the country's most promising young talents as Nigeria seeks to retain the WAFU B U20 title. The tournament also serves as the qualifying competition for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations, adding extra importance to every match.

The Flying Eagles have been drawn in a competitive Group B alongside Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Togo. After facing Ghana in their opening fixture, Nigeria will continue their campaign against the remaining group opponents as they target a place in the knockout stage.

Nigeria enter the competition with confidence after lifting the previous WAFU B U20 Championship title. The Flying Eagles defeated Ghana 2-1 in the final held in Lomé, Togo, and will be hoping to repeat that success when the two rivals meet again.

Speaking before the tournament, Maikaba stressed the importance of maintaining Nigeria's winning tradition at youth level while giving the selected players an opportunity to prove themselves on the regional stage. The coaching staff believes the squad has the quality and character needed to compete for another championship.

The WAFU B U20 Championship has long served as a platform for developing future senior internationals, with several former Flying Eagles stars progressing to the Super Eagles after impressing at youth tournaments. Maikaba will be hoping this latest group can continue that tradition.

With qualification for the 2027 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations also at stake, Nigeria's campaign carries significant importance beyond the regional title. A successful tournament would not only preserve the Flying Eagles' dominance in West Africa but also keep them on course for continental and global competitions.
