Maikaba Demands Defensive Improvement Before Flying Eagles Face Ivory Coast

Flying Eagles head coach Abdu Maikaba has challenged his players to improve their defensive discipline ahead of Nigeria's crucial WAFU B U-20 Championship semi-final against tournament hosts Ivory Coast.

Nigeria secured a place in the last four after progressing from the group stage, but the team's defensive performances have become a major concern. The Flying Eagles have conceded four goals in two matches and managed only one clean sheet during the tournament.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Maikaba admitted that the repeated defensive errors shown by his side were unacceptable and must be corrected before the knockout clash.

The coach pointed to the two goals Nigeria conceded in their previous outing, explaining that both came from similar situations despite the team's preparations on the training ground.

"We need to improve on our defensive approach to the game, most especially in our last game we conceded two goals from similar situations, and we are not happy about that," Maikaba said.

He revealed that the coaching staff had repeatedly worked with the players on defending such situations but admitted that lapses in concentration during matches had proved costly.

"We have taught the players on how to defend such balls. Sometimes during the course of the game they do forget and make little mistakes which will cost us the game," the Flying Eagles coach added.

Maikaba stressed that his technical crew would continue working with the squad before the semi-final to eliminate those errors. He also called on his players to remain fully focused throughout the contest against the Ivorians.

"We will make sure that we address them very well and make sure they concentrate all through the game, and not make such silly mistakes in the semi-final stage," he said.

Nigeria will face an Ivory Coast side backed by home support as both teams battle for a place in the WAFU B U-20 Championship final. The Flying Eagles have shown quality going forward during the tournament, but Maikaba believes defensive organisation and concentration will be decisive against the hosts.

Victory would send Nigeria into the final and move the Flying Eagles one step closer to lifting the regional title. The semi-final is expected to be one of the tournament's biggest tests for Maikaba's young squad as they aim to maintain their quest for silverware.
