Manchester United dropped two crucial Premier League points in a chaotic 2-2 draw at the Vitality Stadium on Friday, March 20, 2026. Harry Maguire's dismissal and a string of contentious refereeing calls overshadowed what had been a promising away performance by Michael Carrick's side.
Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 61st minute after Matheus Cunha was fouled by Alex Jimenez. Ryan Christie equalised for the hosts six minutes later, before a James Hill own goal from a Fernandes corner restored United's lead. Substitute Junior Kroupi then levelled in the 81st minute from the spot after Maguire was dismissed for fouling Evanilson.
The match was defined by two penalty decisions that left United's camp incensed. In the 67th minute, Bournemouth defender Adrien Truffert made upper-body contact with Amad Diallo inside the box, sending the United attacker to the ground. Referee Attwell waved away the appeals, and VAR confirmed the call, ruling that the contact was not sufficient for a foul. Bournemouth immediately broke forward and Christie scored at the other end.
Eleven minutes later, Attwell pointed to the spot again and sent off Maguire for a holding offence on Evanilson; VAR confirmed the decision, ruling it a denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity with no attempt to challenge for the ball. The fact that both incidents involved a two-armed grab was not lost on Carrick or Fernandes.
Carrick described the decisions as "baffling" and "astonishing." He told reporters: "My first thought is he definitely got one of them wrong, because he's given one penalty for the same thing that he's not given one as a two-armed grab. I don't understand how you can give one and not the other; it's crazy."
Fernandes echoed those sentiments, saying he could not understand why VAR did not intervene on the Diallo incident: "One is rewarded as a penalty, the other not. I know it's difficult for the referee to give two penalties in the same game for the same team, but what I don't understand is why VAR doesn't get involved in that situation."
Maguire took to Instagram after the match, writing: "So soft but that's where football is at the moment, and I should know better. You would think both decisions would reach the same outcome." The 33-year-old will serve a one-match ban following the dismissal, which was the third red card of his Premier League career.
The timing was particularly bitter for Maguire. He had begun the day celebrating a recall to Thomas Tuchel's England squad for upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, his first international call-up since September 2024.
The result leaves United third in the Premier League table, having dropped points for only the third time in 10 top-flight fixtures under Carrick. Bournemouth, meanwhile, extended their unbeaten run to 11 games and drew for the fifth consecutive time, leaving them 10th.
