Victor Osimhen scored a brilliant hat-trick as Nigeria crushed Benin Republic 4–0 in Uyo, sealing a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs.
Galatasaray forward and Nigeria’s prolific striker Victor Osimhen produced a scintillating performance as he fired a hat-trick to power the Super Eagles into the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers playoff with a 4–0 demolition of Benin Republic in their final Group C match on Tuesday.
Heading into the decisive encounter, Nigeria sat third in Group C with 14 points, trailing leaders Benin Republic on 17 points and South Africa in second with 16 points. To secure qualification, the Super Eagles needed at least a three-goal victory — but results from other groups meant they had to score four to guarantee a playoff berth.
Rising to the occasion, the once-underperforming Nigerian side came alive at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, with Osimhen leading the charge. The 26-year-old striker opened the scoring just two minutes into the match, finishing off a clever pass from Samuel Chukwueze.
Osimhen doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 35th minute, nodding home another pinpoint cross from Chukwueze. He then completed his hat-trick in the 51st minute, meeting Victor Simon’s cross with a precise header that sent the stadium into wild celebration and silenced the Benin Republic contingent.
In stoppage time, substitute Frank Onyeka added the icing on the cake, rifling home a powerful strike to seal a comprehensive 4–0 victory for Nigeria.
The emphatic win moves the Super Eagles one step closer to returning to the World Cup stage, having missed out on the 2022 edition in Qatar.
