Madugu Outlines Twin Goals for Super Falcons at WAFCON 2026

Posted : 01 July 2026

Super Falcons interim head coach Justine Madugu has outlined two major objectives for Nigeria ahead of the upcoming Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco. The continental powerhouse is determined to retain its African title and also seal qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup. This highly anticipated tournament is scheduled to take place in North Africa from July 25 to August 16, 2026.

Speaking to CAF Online, Madugu explained that securing a ticket to the global showpiece in Brazil represents the team's immediate priority. He stated that the technical crew wants to guarantee their World Cup slot before fully focusing on winning an eleventh continental crown. The coach believes that establishing clear goals will keep his players disciplined throughout the intensive competition.

Nigeria boasts an unparalleled legacy in African women's football; they have won a record ten titles out of the previous editions. The Super Falcons reclaimed their crown at the last tournament in Morocco by staging a dramatic comeback to defeat the host nation 3-2 in a thrilling final. Maintaining this dominance remains a core motivation for the players as they prepare to return to the same country.

Madugu fully acknowledges the difficult challenges that await the reigning champions because every rival is desperate to dethrone them. He noted that the squad possesses a highly coveted prize that every other African nation wants to steal away. To counter this threat, the coaching staff is emphasizing mental resilience alongside rigorous physical training routines during camp.

Recent international friendly matches against Senegal provided valuable insights into the team's current strengths and weaknesses. Madugu candidly admitted that his team is not yet perfect; they have observed various lapses that require immediate technical refinement. The coaches are currently working on these adjustments in private to ensure maximum readiness for the opening match.

The tournament draw places the Super Falcons in Group C where they will face familiar opponents in Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria. Nigeria will kick off their campaign against Tunisia; they will then play their remaining group fixtures against Botswana and Algeria. Football fans eagerly await the final squad announcement which the coach will release in the coming days.
