Madugu Accepts Criticism as Super Falcons Prepare for Cameroon Clash

Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has admitted that criticism comes with the job as Nigeria prepare for a crucial quarter-final clash against Cameroon at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Falcons progressed to the last eight after finishing level on points with Malawi and Zambia in Group D. Nigeria advanced on the head-to-head tiebreaker after scoring more goals in the mini-league between the three teams, securing a place in the quarter-finals for the 14th time.

Reflecting on the team's qualification, Madugu acknowledged the pressure the players faced during a challenging group-stage campaign but expressed relief at reaching the knockout stage.

"Naturally, everyone will be happy to have advanced to this stage of the competition. Given the circumstances we found ourselves in, we placed ourselves under pressure, but thank God we have been able to come out of it. The competition is only just beginning for us," he said.

The coach also admitted that Nigeria's recent defensive performances have been a major concern. The Super Falcons have conceded five goals in their last three matches, a sharp contrast to the defensive solidity that has traditionally defined the team.

"We have always been a team with a very solid defensive line, but recently we have been conceding very unnecessary goals. That is something that worries us a lot, and we have to do a lot of work to ensure the girls do not switch off at any point during the game," Madugu explained.

"The manner in which we are conceding these goals is a serious concern, and it is something we will have to address."

Looking ahead to Sunday's meeting with Cameroon, Madugu described the encounter as a decisive fixture in Nigeria's campaign. Victory would not only send the Super Falcons into the semi-finals but also secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.

"It's a final because it's the match that will determine whether we achieve our first objective or not. Having come this far, we know what is at stake, and we will not take it for granted. We have to go back, start work immediately, study our opponents and come up with a plan that will ensure we emerge victorious," he said.

Madugu also insisted that player selection will continue to depend on tactical requirements rather than reputation or public opinion. He stressed that the coaching staff will analyse Cameroon's strengths and weaknesses before deciding on the starting lineup.

Addressing criticism of his decisions during the tournament, the coach remained philosophical.

"I cannot stop criticism. It's the nature of the job. You cannot please everybody. Everyone watches football from a different perspective," Madugu said. He added that even negative comments can provide valuable lessons and that coaches must be willing to admit mistakes and improve.
