Madueke’s late penalty secures vital win for Chelsea against Crystal Palace

Posted : 28 December 2023

Noni Madueke's 89th-minute penalty secured a crucial win for Chelsea against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge. Mykhailo Mudryk had given Chelsea the lead in the 13th minute, but Palace equalized just before half-time with Michael Olise's strike. Chelsea created numerous opportunities, and despite moments of wasteful finishing, Madueke's late penalty secured the hosts' sixth home win in the Premier League in 2023, moving them to 10th in the table.

Although Chelsea dominated much of the match, Palace had their chances, with Ian Maatsen's effort cleared off the line and Djordje Petrovic making key saves. Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson thought he had scored in the 77th minute, but VAR ruled him offside. The decisive moment came when VAR spotted Eberechi Eze's foul on Madueke, leading to the penalty. The win ended Chelsea's streak of home struggles in the league, while Palace, without a win since November 4, find themselves just three points above the relegation zone.

Despite the defeat, Palace showed resilience and had moments of threat, with Eze's free-kick narrowly missing the target, and Olise and Jean-Philippe Mateta testing Chelsea's keeper. The Eagles, however, have now gone eight league matches without a win, emphasizing the urgency for Roy Hodgson's side to return to winning ways. The loss to Chelsea follows heartbreaking defeats against Liverpool and highlights the need for Palace to secure points swiftly to avoid slipping further down the table.
