The Champions League delivered another night of high drama on Tuesday as Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Arsenal each recorded significant victories to strengthen their positions in the group stage.
At Anfield, Liverpool edged Real Madrid 1–0 thanks to a decisive header from Alexis Mac Allister in the second half. The Argentine midfielder finally broke through after Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had produced a stunning display, making eight key saves to frustrate the six-time European champions. The match also saw the return of former Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was met with jeers from the home crowd upon entering from the Madrid bench.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot will hope this victory signals a turnaround after a difficult spell in which his side suffered six defeats in eight matches. The result also marked Madrid’s first loss since their 5–2 defeat to Atlético Madrid in September. Midfielder Fede Valverde admitted the defeat was “a tough blow,” but insisted the team must “move forward.”
In Paris, Bayern Munich continued their unstoppable form with a 2–1 win over defending champions Paris Saint-Germain, maintaining a perfect record across all competitions this season. Luis Díaz was the star of the show, scoring twice in the first half before being sent off for a reckless challenge on Achraf Hakimi, who was forced off in tears. Despite a late header from João Neves, PSG fell to their first defeat of the campaign.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany praised his side’s effort, saying: “This was a very important three points. The Champions League is not decided today, but performances like this show our intent.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal cruised to a 3–0 victory over Slavia Prague, with 15-year-old Max Dowman making history as the youngest player ever to appear in the competition. Goals from Bukayo Saka and Mikel Merino—the latter scoring twice in the second half—secured a fourth consecutive win for Mikel Arteta’s team, who remain unbeaten and yet to concede a goal in the tournament.
“We are performing at an incredible level, but this is just the beginning,” Merino said after the match. “We have to keep pushing to achieve big things.”
Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed a dominant 4–0 home win over FC Copenhagen, inspired by a brilliant solo goal from Micky van de Ven. Atletico Madrid returned to form with a 3–1 victory over Union Saint-Gilloise, while Napoli and Juventus were both held to frustrating draws against Eintracht Frankfurt and Sporting Lisbon, respectively.
Monaco earned their first win of the season with a narrow 1–0 victory at Bodo/Glimt, and PSV Eindhoven drew 1–1 away to Olympiacos.
Attention now turns to Wednesday’s fixtures, where Inter Milan will look to join Bayern and Arsenal with a perfect record as they face Kairat Almaty, while Manchester City host Borussia Dortmund and Athletic Bilbao travel to Newcastle United.
