Ụmụrụ Ogbenneishii have emerged as champions of the 2025/26 Ogbenneishii President General’s Progressive League, concluding a vibrant grassroots tournament aimed at promoting young football talent within the community. The victory was accompanied by a ₦1.5 million cash prize, rewarding the team’s skill, determination, and teamwork.

The Progressive League was designed to give emerging players a platform to display their abilities to coaches, football managers, and club representatives, particularly during the festive season when local fans gather to enjoy raw and dynamic football.

In a thrilling final, Ụmụrụ Ogbenneishii narrowly defeated Ụmụihi Ogbenneishii in a match full of flair, technical prowess, and high energy. The crowd cheered every move, celebrating the passion and artistry on display from both sides. Amaọjị Ogbenneishii secured third place, rounding off a competition that emphasized youth development, community unity, and the power of sport to bring people together.

Speaking after the tournament, Joseph Onyekwere, sponsor of the league and President General of the Ogbenneishii Autonomous Community in Imo State, commended all six participating teams — Ndiohia Ogbe, Umuihiokwu, Umuzu, Amaọjị, Umueleke, and Umuihii — for their discipline and outstanding performances.

“The level of football artistry displayed by these young players exceeded my expectations,” Onyekwere said. “I am proud to sponsor this initiative and hope it encourages others in the community to support youth development through sports.”

The tournament coordinator, Bruno Anyanwu, also praised Onyekwere for his commitment to nurturing talent. “This platform will serve as a stepping stone for some of these players, opening doors for future opportunities in football and beyond,” he noted.

The three-month-long event concluded with individual awards recognizing excellence, including Player of the Tournament, alongside consolation prizes for other teams. The closing ceremony was attended by notable sports figures such as Ademola Are, President of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation; the Okere of the National Sports Commission; and former Director-General Patrick Ekeji.

The successful staging of the tournament highlighted the community’s dedication to fostering youth football and providing opportunities for young players to shine.
