Lyon Beat Nice to Top Ligue 1 as Monaco Suffer First Defeat of the Season

Posted : 19 October 2026

Lyon claimed the Ligue 1 summit after recovering from a goal down to beat Nice 2-1, despite finishing the match with 10 players. The victory lifted Paulo Fonseca’s side to 14 points, putting them ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, Paris FC, Lille and Monaco on goal difference. Lyon now face a crucial meeting with PSG next weekend.

Nice took the lead in the 18th minute through Ivory Coast forward Elye Wahi, who scored his second league goal of the campaign. Lyon responded before half-time, with Pavel Sulc turning in a rebound to equalise before Tanner Tessmann headed home three minutes later to complete the comeback.

The hosts faced a difficult finish after Keito Nakamura was sent off for a high boot around the 70th minute. Nice pushed for an equaliser, with veteran Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel heading against the crossbar and Wahi striking the post. Wahi appeared to have rescued a point in stoppage time, but a VAR review ruled his effort offside.

Fonseca welcomed his team's position at the top but played down its significance, saying that collecting 14 points was encouraging and should boost confidence while bringing greater responsibility.

Lorient Hand Monaco Their First League Defeat

Monaco missed the opportunity to reclaim first place after losing 1-0 away to Lorient, suffering their first Ligue 1 defeat of the season.

The decisive moment came shortly after the hour mark when Lorient wing-back Dembo Sylla was brought down by Monaco captain Denis Zakaria inside the penalty area. Noah Cadiou converted the resulting spot-kick, sending goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky the wrong way despite the Finnish international guessing the direction correctly.

The result left Monaco on 14 points alongside Lyon and three other teams, with goal difference separating the leading sides in a tightly contested title race.

Paris FC Edge Rennes in Seven-Goal Thriller

Paris FC strengthened their position among the league leaders with a dramatic 4-3 victory over Rennes, sealed by Lassine Sinayoko's stoppage-time penalty.

Maxime Lopez twice put the home side ahead, but Rennes forward Esteban Lepaul repeatedly brought his team level from the penalty spot. Lepaul completed a hat-trick of penalties, making the contest one of the weekend's most eventful matches.

Sinayoko looked to have secured the win with a spectacular bicycle kick late in the game. However, a handball by Brazilian substitute Otavio gave Rennes another opportunity, allowing Lepaul to convert his third penalty and restore parity.

Paris FC eventually secured all three points after VAR identified a shirt pull by Valentin Rongier on Sinayoko. The Mali forward stepped up to convert the decisive penalty in stoppage time, ensuring his team remained among the five clubs tied on 14 points. Rennes, meanwhile, lost ground in the race for the top positions.

Marseille Secure Important Win Against Angers

Marseille produced an emphatic 5-2 victory over Angers to ease their relegation concerns and record only their third league win in seven matches.

Angers took an early lead through Lilian Raolisoa, but Marseille responded with goals from Himad Abdelli and Nouhoum Kamissoko before the interval. Amine Gouiri then extended the hosts' advantage, scoring his fifth league goal of the season by following up after his penalty was saved by goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.

Angers attempted to fight back when Amine El Ouazzani converted a penalty, but late strikes from Amine Harit and Igor Paixao secured a comfortable victory for Marseille.

The result offered relief to a side that had started the weekend just above the relegation play-off position on goal difference. Their domestic struggles had been compounded by defeats in their opening two Europa League matches.

Auxerre Beat Le Havre to Boost Survival Hopes

Auxerre claimed a valuable 3-1 away victory over Le Havre, leaving the hosts without a league win and still at the bottom of the table.

Cameroon forward Danny Namaso scored twice to help Auxerre secure the points and create more distance between themselves and the relegation zone. The result increased the pressure on Le Havre, whose difficult start to the season has left them needing a significant improvement to climb out of danger.

Ligue 1 Title Race Remains Wide Open

The latest results have intensified the competition at the top of Ligue 1, with Lyon, PSG, Paris FC, Lille and Monaco all sitting on 14 points. Lyon hold the advantage on goal difference, but the narrow margins leave little room for error as the season progresses.

With Lyon preparing to face PSG next weekend, the upcoming fixture could have a significant impact on the standings. Monaco will also be looking to respond after their first defeat, while Paris FC's dramatic win has reinforced their credentials as a team capable of challenging the established contenders.
