Luka Modric Bids Farewell to Real Madrid After 13 Glorious Years, Alonso Eyes Fresh Start

Posted : 10 July 2025

Luka Modric's illustrious chapter with Real Madrid officially came to an end following a heavy 4–0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup semifinal in New Jersey. The 39-year-old Croatian midfielder made his final appearance as a second-half substitute, but despite the disappointing result, his Real Madrid legacy remains untouchable.

Modric leaves the Spanish capital with a club-record 28 trophies over 13 years, including six Champions League titles and four LaLiga crowns. Known for his grace, vision, and work ethic, Modric also won the Ballon d’Or in 2018 and famously assisted Sergio Ramos’ 93rd-minute equalizer in the 2014 Champions League final—a pivotal moment in Real’s “La Decima” triumph.

Despite diminishing minutes last season under former coach Carlo Ancelotti, Modric’s influence and class never faded. His decision to join AC Milan next season aligns with his aim to remain fit and competitive ahead of a potential appearance for Croatia in the 2026 World Cup.

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez described him as a "legend whose legacy will live on forever," while new coach Xabi Alonso, who played alongside Modric in Madrid's midfield, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that one poor match won't define his contributions.

The semifinal defeat also marked the beginning of a new chapter for Real Madrid under Xabi Alonso, who took over managerial duties in May following a successful stint at Bayer Leverkusen. Alonso admitted PSG's well-drilled team exposed the early-stage nature of his current project. “They are at a very high level and have been for some time, while we are just beginning,” he stated post-match. Despite the loss, Alonso believes the experience will serve as a stepping stone for growth.

The tournament did offer bright spots: Gonzalo Garcia impressed with four goals, new signings Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen debuted, and Argentine prospect Franco Mastantuono is expected to arrive in time for the new LaLiga season.

Alonso's official league debut as Real Madrid manager is slated for August 19 at home against Osasuna, with little time for rest or preparation. "We’re starting from scratch," he said—highlighting both the challenges ahead and the opportunity to shape a new era without Modric.
