Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has won the men’s Coach of the Year award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony held in London on Monday, following his team’s triumph at the World Cup. The 65-year-old manager received the honour in recognition of his leadership and the team’s impressive performances throughout the tournament.
Speaking after collecting the award, De la Fuente credited his players for their success, stressing the importance of unity and selflessness. He described teamwork as the foundation of the team’s achievements and praised the quality of talent available to him, insisting that the recognition belonged largely to the players who consistently put the collective goal ahead of individual ambitions.
De la Fuente’s rise to the top of international football has been built on years of experience within Spain’s national-team development system. After completing his playing career and spending time in club management, he spotted an advertisement for a youth-team coaching position published by the Spanish Football Federation in 2013. He applied and was appointed coach of Spain’s Under-19 side, beginning a journey that eventually took him to the senior national team.
His work with Spain’s youth teams helped establish the foundations for the country’s subsequent success. Several players he coached at junior level later featured in teams that won the UEFA Nations League, Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup, highlighting the value of long-term player development and continuity within the national setup.
Spain’s World Cup campaign was not without challenges. The team began the tournament in the United States with a goalless draw against debutants Cape Verde, but their performances improved as the competition progressed. De la Fuente remained confident in his squad’s ability, and Spain eventually defeated France 2-0 in the semi-final to secure a place in the final.
In the title decider against Argentina in New Jersey, Spain maintained their composure against a physically demanding opponent. Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal to secure a 1-0 victory, completing Spain’s successful World Cup campaign and strengthening De la Fuente’s reputation as one of the leading coaches in international football.
Meanwhile, Barcelona manager Pere Romeu won the women’s Coach of the Year award after guiding the club through a successful season. Under his leadership, Barcelona claimed four major honours: the Spanish league title, the Copa de la Reina, the Spanish Super Cup and the UEFA Women’s Champions League. His recognition highlighted the club’s continued strength in women’s football.
