Colombia opened their World Cup Group K campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over debutants Uzbekistan on Wednesday at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. A standout performance from Luis Díaz proved decisive as the South Americans overcame a spirited challenge in front of more than 80,000 spectators.
The Bayern Munich forward was central to Colombia’s attacking threat, contributing a goal, an assist, and also striking the woodwork during an energetic display. His creativity helped Colombia settle into the contest, particularly in the first half when he delivered a precise lofted pass that allowed Daniel Muñoz to volley home after 40 minutes.
Uzbekistan responded strongly and briefly restored parity through Abbosbek Fayzullaev, who scored his country’s first-ever World Cup goal. The midfielder reacted quickest after Eldor Shomurodov’s effort was saved, heading in the rebound to bring the debutants level and spark celebrations among their supporters.
However, Colombia regained control of the match shortly after the equaliser. Díaz restored their advantage with a shot that slipped past Uzbek goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov, a moment that shifted momentum firmly back in favour of the South Americans.
As Uzbekistan pushed forward in search of another equaliser, Colombia sealed the win deep into stoppage time when Jaminton Campaz rose to head in a well-taken third goal. The late strike confirmed a strong opening performance for Colombia in a group that also includes Portugal and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The result puts Colombia at the top of Group K following the earlier 1-1 draw between Portugal and DR Congo, setting up a competitive battle for qualification in the matches ahead.
