Lookman Wins Madrid Derby as Orban Fires Amedspor to Turkish League Summit

Nigerian players abroad produced several notable performances over the weekend, with Ademola Lookman featuring in Atlético Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Real Madrid and Gift Orban scoring and assisting in Amedspor’s 3-2 win against Beşiktaş.

Lookman entered Atlético’s Madrid derby victory in the 67th minute, replacing Álex Baena. Alejandro Grimaldo opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Jonathan David doubled the advantage, while Antonio Rüdiger pulled one back for Real Madrid late on.

The appearance was Lookman’s seventh LaLiga outing of the season. Atlético moved to 16 points after the victory, while Real Madrid remained on 15 points following their second league defeat of the campaign.

In Turkey, Gift Orban continued his impressive start with Amedspor. The Nigerian forward scored in the 13th minute with a long-range strike before providing the assist for Dia Saba’s goal nine minutes later as Amedspor established a 2-0 lead.

Furkan Soyalp restored Amedspor’s two-goal cushion after Beşiktaş had reduced the deficit. The visitors scored again late, but Amedspor held on for a 3-2 victory that moved them to the top of the Süper Lig.

Orban now has seven goals and two assists in six league appearances for the newly promoted club. His latest contribution further strengthened his position among the division’s leading scorers.

Amedspor were without fellow Nigerian Collins Yira Sor, who remains sidelined with a muscle injury. Beşiktaş captain Wilfred Ndidi was an unused substitute during the defeat.

Ibrahim Olawoyin also opened his league account for the season as Çaykur Rizespor drew 2-2 away to Göztepe. Olawoyin scored in the 70th minute to level the match before Rizespor took the lead, but a 90th-minute penalty earned Göztepe a point.

In England, Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi both started for Fulham in their 1-1 draw against Manchester United. Bassey’s effort helped create Fulham’s opener when his shot was deflected into the United goal by Lisandro Martínez, while Matheus Cunha equalised late for the visitors.

Victor Boniface was an unused substitute as Bayer Leverkusen defeated RB Leipzig 2-0 in Germany. Nathan Tella remained sidelined with injury, while Kevin Akpoguma was an unused substitute as Frosinone beat Como 2-0 in Italy.

Christantus Uche missed Getafe’s 1-0 victory over Málaga because of injury. The weekend therefore produced mixed results for Nigerians abroad, with Orban’s goalscoring display and Lookman’s involvement in Atlético’s derby victory providing two of the major highlights.
