Lookman Shines in Assist Role as Atletico Madrid Reach UCL Quarter-Finals Despite 3-2 Loss to Spurs

Posted : 19 March 2026

Tottenham Hotspur gave a spirited account of themselves in a rip-roaring second leg, but their Champions League campaign ended as Atletico Madrid's commanding first-leg cushion proved too great to overturn. Spurs had been hammered 5-2 in Madrid the previous week, leaving themselves needing a near-impossible turnaround at home.

Lookman was named in the starting lineup for Diego Simeone's side and made an early impact. The odds of a Spurs comeback had seemed even slimmer when an offside flag denied Lookman in the 6th minute; a VAR review confirmed he had edged past the last defender. It was a fine line that kept the tie firmly in Atletico's hands from the opening stages.

Tottenham drew first blood at the half-hour mark when Mathys Tel delivered a precise cross and Randal Kolo Muani headed it cleanly into the net, unmarked at the far post. The goal lifted the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and gave the hosts genuine belief heading into the break.

Atletico issued an immediate response two minutes into the second half. A rapid counter-attack ended with Lookman threading a pass into Julian Alvarez, who found the top corner with a clinical finish; it was the Argentine's third goal of the tie. Alvarez has now scored 14 Champions League goals in his last 17 matches, underlining his status as one of Europe's most dangerous strikers in European competition.

Spurs retook the lead almost immediately. Xavi Simons collected the ball 25 yards out and curled an unstoppable effort into the far corner; stand-in goalkeeper Juan Musso had no chance. Lookman was booked in the 56th minute for a hard challenge before being replaced by Alexander Sorloth seven minutes later. His contribution on the night remained significant: one assist, 88% pass accuracy, 37 touches, and three defensive contributions across 63 minutes.

Hancko's 75th-minute header from a set piece drew Atletico level again on the night, which all but closed the tie. Tottenham still found a winner when substitute Callum Olusesi found Simons, who was brought down inside the box by Jose Maria Gimenez; Simons converted the penalty in stoppage time to seal a 3-2 home win.

Simons' brace secured Tottenham's first home victory in two months and ended their eight-match winless run. However, the broader picture remains difficult for Spurs; they are still without a win in their last 12 Premier League games heading into the weekend, with the relegation battle now their priority.

For Atletico, attention now turns to a heavyweight quarter-final against Barcelona. The two sides have already faced each other three times this season: twice in the Copa del Rey and once in La Liga. Lookman has scored against the Blaugrana this season and will be targeting another impactful display when the quarter-final gets underway.
