Lookman Hails Collective Grit as Atletico Madrid Stun 10-Man Barcelona at Camp Nou

Posted : 09 April 2026

Nigeria international Ademola Lookman played a key role as Atletico Madrid secured a historic 2-0 victory against Barcelona at the Spotify Camp Nou. The win, which came during the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal on Wednesday night, marked a personal milestone for manager Diego Simeone. It was his first ever managerial victory at Barcelona’s home ground.

The match turned decisively in favor of the visitors just before the halftime whistle. Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí was shown a straight red card for a professional foul on Giuliano Simeone. Julián Álvarez immediately punished the hosts by converting the resulting free-kick with a clinical strike. In the second half, Alexander Sørloth doubled the advantage by finishing a cross from Matteo Ruggeri to put Los Rojiblancos in a commanding position.

Speaking after the game, Lookman expressed his pride in the team’s performance and their ability to keep a clean sheet in a hostile environment. He told TNT Sports that the result was a testament to the hard work and togetherness of the squad. The former African Footballer of the Year noted that the timing of the goals and the red card were the defining moments of the contest.

Despite the two-goal cushion, Lookman remained cautious about the second leg. He described the upcoming return fixture in Madrid as a massive challenge against a top-tier opponent. He stressed the importance of maintaining calm heads and focusing on one game at a time to ensure progression to the semifinals.

Lookman also shared his positive experience in the Spanish capital since joining Atletico from Atalanta during the winter transfer window. The forward has settled in quickly, contributing five goals and four assists in 15 appearances. He described his time at the club so far as "great" and expressed hope that his strong form would continue.

The victory puts Atletico in a strong position ahead of next Tuesday's second leg at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. While Barcelona dominated possession and created several chances through Lamine Yamal and Marcus Rashford, they were unable to breach a resilient Atletico defense led by goalkeeper Juan Musso.
