Lookman explains why Serie A is tougher than Bundesliga

Posted : 15 July 2026

Ademola Lookman has shared his view on the differences between playing in the Bundesliga and Serie A, saying Italian football presents a tougher challenge because of its strong defensive structure and tactical discipline. The Nigeria international believes both leagues have unique qualities, but scoring goals is significantly more difficult in Italy.

The Super Eagles forward experienced both competitions before completing his move to Atletico Madrid earlier this year. After struggling to establish himself in the Premier League with Everton, Lookman moved to RB Leipzig in Germany before enjoying loan spells at Fulham and Leicester City. His career reached new heights following his transfer to Atalanta in 2022, where he became one of Serie A's most dangerous attackers.

Speaking during an interview with former Premier League defender Nedum Onuoha for BBC Sport, Lookman explained that the two leagues demand different qualities from attackers.

"Obviously, the football in Italy is different. In Italian football, it's hard to score goals because it's known for its defence, but in Germany it's a bit more open and you get a lot of chances," Lookman said. He added that adapting to life in Italy took about a month, although scoring on his debut and maintaining a strong run of form helped him settle quickly.

Lookman enjoyed an outstanding spell with Atalanta, scoring 55 goals and registering 27 assists before his transfer to Atletico Madrid. His most memorable performance came in the 2024 UEFA Europa League final, where he scored a historic hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen to secure Atalanta's first major European trophy and end the German club's unbeaten run.

His comments echo those of fellow Super Eagles defender Ola Aina, who previously said his time in Serie A improved his tactical awareness and defensive understanding. Aina described Italy as an ideal environment for learning the finer details of the game because of its emphasis on organisation and positioning.

Since joining Atletico Madrid in February, Lookman has adapted quickly to life in La Liga under Diego Simeone. The 28-year-old has scored nine goals in 24 appearances and is expected to play a key role for the Spanish club during the 2026/27 campaign after an impressive start to his career in Madrid.
