2025/2026 NNL Mid-Season Review: Lobi Stars Hit Top Gear, Dismantle Mighty Junior 5-0

Lobi Stars FC Makurdi sent a strong statement on Saturday at the McCarthy Stadium, Makurdi, ahead of the second-stanza resumption, dismantling non-league side Mighty Junior FC of Gboko 5-0 in a commanding friendly that underlined their readiness for the next phase of the season.

The Pride of Benue controlled proceedings from kickoff, stroking passes with confidence and dictating the tempo, while the visitors were left chasing shadows despite showing defensive resilience early on.

The breakthrough arrived in the 26th minute when Paul Itim rose highest to nod home a pinpoint cross from the lively Suur Kumaga. Barely two minutes later, Kumaga turned from provider to scorer, weaving past defenders before unleashing a thunderbolt from outside the box to make it 2-0.

A setback followed in the 37th minute as goalkeeper Femi Kayode was forced off injured, with Daniel Atsaka stepping in. Lobi Stars’ rhythm never dipped, and Peter Onah’s composed header just before halftime made it 3-0, capping a dominant opening half.

After the restart, Coach John Onuh refreshed his side, but the intensity only grew. Emmanuel Ofem capitalized on high pressing alongside Abdulazeez Tijani, forcing a defensive error and calmly slotting home the fourth goal.

Sustained pressure from Ofem, Tijani, and Jonathan Abu kept Mighty Junior pinned back, and the fifth arrived in spectacular fashion when midfield general Bello thundered home from outside the box, sending the keeper the wrong way.

Outclassed and overwhelmed, the Gboko side had no answer as Lobi Stars cruised to a five-star finish.

Coach Onuh praised his players’ performance in a post-match chat but stressed the importance of maintaining focus, with eyes firmly set on carrying this momentum into the decisive run-in and achieving the ultimate goal: promotion to the Premier League.
