Lobi Stars FC back on NPFL summit after NPFL Match Day 23 victory

Posted : 04 March 2024

Two second-half goals from John Victor and Alao Dabani were all Lobi Stars needed to defeat visiting Katsina United in a thrilling NPFL Week 23 fixture at the Lafia Stadium and reclaim the top spot on the league table.

Coach Eugene Agagbe's men drew inspiration from the consistent cheering of home fans and unsettled Coach Abubakar Bala's side with a series of attacks. However, goalkeeper Pius Ibrahim refused to surrender as his agility played a key role in stopping Alao Dabani, Samuel Tiza, and Ahmadu Liman's efforts, resulting in a goalless first half.

A dramatic twist unfolded in the second half when mid-season signing John Victor broke the deadlock with a well-taken freekick, marking his first-ever goal for the Makurdi-based side in the 70th minute. The former Warri Wolves centre-back capitalized on Emmanuel Okoko's foul on Harmony Ikande near the opponent's 18-yard box, changing the scoreline to 1-0.

Thirteen minutes later, Alao Dabani scored his third goal of the season to double the lead. The former 3SC forward took advantage of another sublime freekick from Victor to nod the ball beyond the helpless goalkeeper Ibrahim, changing the scoreline to 2-0.

The 'Chanji Boys,' as the visitors are fondly called, came all out to reduce the deficit but met solid defending from the 'Yes Father Boys' defensive line, marshalled by Moses Tsehuan, Sunday Chinedu, John Victor, and Monday Akile, who were outstanding in keeping Emmanuel Jonas, Andrew Idoko, and Nazifi Yahaya at bay until full time.

The result has taken the Shoe Get Size Boys back to the top of the NPFL table with 42 points. Coach Eugene Agagbe of Lobi Stars acknowledged his players' resilience, stating that it was the key to the victory and promising to guide them through the journey they have embarked upon.

"I thank my players. They have shown strong character that they want to win the league. What they have exhibited today is an indication that they want to go somewhere, and by the special grace of God, we shall continue to fight. As I have always said, the league is getting tougher, and we will do better in our next game as well," Agagbe stated.

The Pride of Benue will take on Abia Warriors in Aba this weekend in Matchday 24.
