Lobi Stars, Basira Renew Pre-Season Rivalry in Lafia

Posted : 02 October 2026

Lobi Stars of Makurdi will renew their pre-season rivalry with FC Basira when both sides meet in Lafia as preparations intensify for the 2026/2027 Nigeria National League (NNL) season.

The fixture provides another opportunity for Lobi Stars Head Coach Bala Nikyu to assess his squad against familiar opposition while working on the tactical and technical aspects of the team ahead of the October league resumption.

The two sides previously met in a closely contested friendly at the McCarthy Stadium, Makurdi, where they settled for a 1–1 draw.

That encounter provided both coaches with valuable insight into the strengths and areas requiring improvement in their respective squads, setting the stage for another competitive meeting in Lafia.

With FC Basira enjoying home advantage this time, Lobi Stars will be looking to translate their preparations into another disciplined performance while continuing to build match fitness and understanding among the players.

For Nikyu, the encounter offers an opportunity to examine different combinations, assess the progress of players competing for starting positions and address tactical shortcomings identified during previous friendly matches.

The Alia Boys have used their pre-season programme to sharpen their organisation and improve cohesion, with the coaching crew also giving players opportunities to demonstrate their readiness for the demands of the new campaign.

FC Basira, meanwhile, will be aiming to make home advantage count and provide another stern examination for their more established North-Central opponents.

The Lafia encounter is therefore expected to offer another competitive test, with both teams seeking improvements rather than simply focusing on the result.

As the NNL season approaches, Lobi Stars will continue to focus on building a balanced squad capable of sustaining the demands of the campaign.

The encounter against Basira could provide another useful indication of how far the Pride of Benue have progressed in their preparations for the new season.
