Liverpool manager Arne Slot has highlighted his team’s ongoing difficulties in breaking down low-block defenses after their goalless draw with Arsenal in Thursday’s Premier League clash.
The result marked a rare moment for the defending champions, who failed to register a single shot on target in a league match for the first time since their 2010 game against Wigan Athletic, ending a run of 600 consecutive Premier League fixtures with at least one shot on target.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Slot admitted that this struggle against certain playing styles has affected Liverpool throughout the season. "I've said many times that against certain playing styles, we're very strong, and against others, we struggle," he said. "Even against Arsenal’s low block, we found it difficult to create chances, despite keeping possession for long periods. That is something we need to improve on and one of the reasons we are behind them in the table."
Liverpool currently sit fourth, 14 points behind Arsenal, who lead the table by six points over Manchester City and Aston Villa. Despite a nine-game unbeaten run, Slot noted the drop in his side’s offensive output, with shots on target down from 6.1 per game last season to just four this term.
"The only thing missing, not for the first time, is the final moments around the box," Slot said. "You want to create more chances, but against a strong Arsenal side with great momentum, I’m still positive about our performance."
Liverpool will face Barnsley in the FA Cup third round on Monday before returning to league action against Burnley on January 17.
