Liverpool Star Diogo Jota, Brother Andre Silva Killed in Tragic Car Crash

Posted : 03 July 2025

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has tragically died at the age of 28 following a car crash in the Spanish province of Zamora. The accident, which occurred around 00:30 local time on Thursday, also claimed the life of his younger brother, Andre Silva, a 26-year-old professional footballer for Portuguese second-division club Penafiel. Spanish authorities confirmed that the brothers' Lamborghini veered off the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle and caught fire shortly after.

Jota, a key figure in both Liverpool and Portugal’s recent successes, had recently celebrated personal milestones as well—marrying his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children. The ceremony took place on June 22, and the couple had shared joyful moments from the day on social media.

The loss has sent shockwaves through the football community. Jota had helped Liverpool secure the Premier League title last season and played a pivotal role in Portugal's triumphs in the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and again in 2025. The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) released a heartfelt statement expressing its devastation, describing Jota as not only an exceptional player with nearly 50 international caps but also a person known for his infectious spirit and deep impact on his community.

In response to the tragedy, the FPF has requested that UEFA hold a minute’s silence before Portugal’s Women’s Euros match against Spain. FC Porto, where both brothers spent time in their youth careers, also paid tribute, calling the news "shocking and deeply sorrowful."

Portugal’s Prime Minister, Luis Montenegro, extended his condolences to the family, calling it “a sad day for football and for national and international sports.” As the football world reflects on the legacy left by Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, tributes continue to pour in for two athletes who inspired many both on and off the field.
