Liverpool's season in jeopardy as Klopp's farewell hopes fade

Posted : 17 April 2024

Liverpool's season, once filled with talk of a potential quadruple under Jurgen Klopp's leadership, has taken a sharp turn, with their Europa League hopes hanging by a thread after a 3-0 loss to Atalanta in the first leg of the quarterfinals and an earlier FA Cup exit at the hands of Manchester United in a 4-3 thriller at Old Trafford.

The Reds' struggles have been compounded by disappointing performances in the Premier League, where they've been held to a 2-2 draw by United and suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace, falling behind Manchester City in the title race by two points. Slow starts have plagued Liverpool, with 21 occasions this season seeing them concede the opening goal, leading to challenges in mounting comebacks.

Additionally, Liverpool's forwards have seen a dip in form, struggling to convert chances into goals, with a mere nine goals scored in their last six league games from 149 shots, translating to a conversion rate of just six percent. Mohamed Salah has been out of sorts since his return from injury, while Diogo Jota's return from a layoff has been marred by inconsistency. Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has criticized the trio of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo as "scruffy" compared to the previous frontline trio of Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher acknowledges the difference in playing style between the current attackers and their predecessors, suggesting that their finishing tendencies might account for the statistical disparities. Nonetheless, Klopp faces a significant challenge in rejuvenating his side's form and salvaging their season, with time running out to salvage silverware and provide a fitting send-off for the revered manager.
