Liverpool's Michael Edwards returns as CEO of football under FSG

Posted : 12 March 2024

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool's American owners, have officially appointed Michael Edwards as the organization's CEO of football, entrusting him with the crucial task of revamping the club's football operations. Edwards, renowned for his role as Liverpool's former sporting director, is credited with revolutionizing the club's recruitment strategy and facilitating the appointment of Jurgen Klopp as manager in 2015.

After departing Liverpool in 2022, Edwards is set to return to the fold under the FSG umbrella, where his primary focus will be rebuilding the football operations team following Klopp's impending departure at the end of the season. FSG had struggled to find a suitable replacement for Edwards, with Julian Ward and Jorg Schmadtke both enduring brief stints as sporting director post-Edwards' tenure.

Edwards' return marks the dawn of a new era at Liverpool, with the seasoned executive hinting at potential expansion plans for FSG within the football landscape. Expressing his commitment to taking on fresh challenges and opportunities, Edwards emphasized the importance of investment and growth, suggesting that FSG may explore acquiring additional clubs to bolster their football portfolio.

Amidst speculation surrounding the vacant sporting director role at Liverpool, reports indicate that Richard Hughes, currently serving as Bournemouth's technical director, is being considered as Edwards' successor. Despite receiving offers from other clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester United since his departure from Liverpool, Edwards has reportedly turned them down in favor of awaiting the right opportunity, further underlining his dedication to the club and FSG's vision for the future.
