Liverpool offer new deal to Nigeria-eligible talented defender

Liverpool, the reigning Premier League champions, are making strategic moves to retain one of their brightest young prospects, central defender Wellity Lucky. With his current deal running out at the end of June, the club is keen to secure his services for the long term.


The 19-year-old centre-back, who holds eligibility to play for Nigeria, England, and Spain, has reportedly been presented with a new four-year contract. This comes via trusted transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, who noted Liverpool’s intention to keep the teenager amid growing external interest.


Despite Liverpool's efforts, the path to retaining Lucky is far from straightforward. Clubs from Spain and Germany have entered the race, with both believed to be in active discussions to lure the promising defender away from Anfield.


Lucky, who was born in Zaragoza to Nigerian parents, started his football development with local sides San Gregorio Arrabal and Real Zaragoza. He later moved to the UK with his family, where his career began to flourish within England’s elite youth systems.


He became part of Liverpool’s Academy setup at the U13 level and officially turned professional with the club in April 2023. Since then, he has steadily climbed the ranks, earning praise for his maturity and defensive awareness.


On the international front, Lucky has already donned the England shirt at U15 and U16 levels. He was also invited to join Spain’s U17 squad for a friendly match against Italy in early 2023, although he didn’t make an appearance on that occasion.


Now a key figure within Liverpool's youth structure, Lucky featured in 17 games during the 2024–2025 campaign, participating in the Premier League 2, UEFA Youth League, and EFL Trophy. As interest from European clubs grows, Liverpool will be determined to keep one of their top youth talents at the club.
