Divock Origi has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31, bringing an end to a career highlighted by memorable achievements with Liverpool and the Belgian national team.
The former striker secured a special place in Liverpool folklore thanks to his decisive contributions during the club’s triumphant 2018-19 UEFA Champions League campaign. Origi played a crucial role in one of the competition’s greatest comebacks, scoring twice as Liverpool overturned a three-goal first-leg deficit to defeat Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield and reach the final.
He then added another unforgettable chapter by scoring in Liverpool’s victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final, helping the Reds secure their sixth European crown. Those performances cemented his reputation as a player capable of delivering on the biggest occasions.
Origi also became a fan favourite in the Merseyside derby. During his time at Anfield, he scored six goals against Everton, including a dramatic stoppage-time winner that sparked wild celebrations from then-manager Jurgen Klopp. The goal remains one of the most iconic moments of Klopp’s tenure at Liverpool.
Across eight seasons with the Reds, Origi registered 41 goals in 175 appearances, despite starting only 68 matches. His impact often came from the bench, earning him a reputation as one of Liverpool’s most reliable game-changing substitutes.
The Belgian began his professional journey with French club Lille before moving to Liverpool in 2014. He later became part of the squad that ended the club’s 30-year wait for a league title by winning the Premier League in 2020.
After leaving Liverpool in 2022, Origi joined Italian giants AC Milan on a free transfer. He later returned to England on loan with Nottingham Forest before mutually ending his contract with Milan in December.
Confirming his decision to retire, Origi reflected on a career that fulfilled his childhood ambitions. In a message shared on social media, he expressed gratitude for the opportunities he received, the trophies he won, and the supporters who stood by him throughout his journey.
The former forward thanked his clubs, coaches, teammates, and fans for their role in shaping his career, describing his playing chapter as complete while hinting at new opportunities and challenges ahead.
Origi leaves the game remembered not only for his trophies and goals but also for his knack for producing unforgettable moments when his teams needed them most.
