Liverpool are anxiously awaiting medical confirmation after star signing Alexander Isak appeared to sustain a serious injury during Saturday's 2-1 victory over Tottenham in London. The Swedish forward was hurt while netting the opening goal following a sliding challenge from Spurs defender Micky van der Ven.
The 26-year-old, who entered the match as a second-half substitute, was visibly distressed and unable to celebrate with his teammates before leaving the pitch. Liverpool manager Arne Slot described the situation immediately after the game, admitting that his “gut feeling” suggested the injury was serious. “If a player doesn't even try to come back, that is usually not a good thing,” Slot said, while urging caution until medical assessments were complete.
Reports from The Athletic and Sky Sports on Monday indicated Liverpool fear Isak has suffered a broken leg, a setback that could sideline him for a lengthy period. The news is particularly concerning given Isak’s disrupted start at Anfield. Since his £125 million transfer from Newcastle, the forward has made only 16 appearances and scored three goals, having missed pre-season due to a dispute with his former club and later suffering a groin injury.
Any prolonged absence for Isak would be a significant challenge for Slot, especially with Mohamed Salah away at the Africa Cup of Nations and Cody Gakpo still recovering from a muscle injury. This leaves the Liverpool manager relying on Hugo Ekitike, who has been in form with five goals in four games, and Federico Chiesa, who has seen limited playing time, to lead the attack.
Despite these setbacks, Liverpool have stabilized their campaign, climbing to fifth in the Premier League and extending their unbeaten league run to five games after a turbulent start to the season.
