Liverpool were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Anfield after Enzo Fernandez’s equaliser cancelled out Ryan Gravenberch’s early opener. The result moved Liverpool closer to securing Champions League qualification, while Chelsea ended a damaging six-match losing run in the Premier League.
The home side made a bright start and took the lead within minutes when Gravenberch curled a fine effort into the top corner after being set up by teenage winger Rio Ngumoha. Liverpool initially looked in control but gradually allowed Chelsea to grow into the contest.
Chelsea responded well and created several opportunities as confidence increased throughout the first half. Their equaliser arrived when Fernandez delivered a free-kick that evaded everyone before finding the back of the net.
The visitors thought they had completed the turnaround early in the second half when Cole Palmer scored, but the goal was ruled out for offside during the build-up. Liverpool later had a goal of their own disallowed after Cody Gakpo was judged to have been offside before Curtis Jones headed home.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot faced frustration from supporters after substituting Ngumoha in the second half, with loud boos heard around Anfield. The reaction intensified at full-time as fans voiced disappointment over another missed opportunity during a difficult run of form.
Despite late chances from Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool could not find a winner. The draw leaves them fourth in the table, while Chelsea remain ninth but gain a much-needed boost ahead of their upcoming FA Cup final against Manchester City.
Interim Chelsea boss Calum McFarlane will take encouragement from the performance after a challenging start to his spell in charge. Chelsea showed greater organisation and resilience, with the return of Levi Colwill helping strengthen the defence as the team avoided a seventh consecutive league defeat.
