Liverpool Edge Wrexham as Rio Ngumoha Seals Second Pre-Season Win Under Iraola

Liverpool continued their encouraging pre-season preparations with a narrow 1-0 victory over Wrexham at Yankee Stadium in New York, giving new head coach Andoni Iraola his second consecutive win since taking charge of the Premier League champions.

Teenage forward Rio Ngumoha proved to be the difference, scoring from close range in the 75th minute to delight a crowd of more than 42,000, the majority of whom were supporting Liverpool. The goal capped another promising display from the club's emerging young talents during their United States tour.

The result followed Liverpool's 4-2 victory over Sunderland in Iraola's first game in charge. That opening fixture was overshadowed by an injury to defender Joe Gomez, who remained unavailable against Wrexham. Also absent were new signing Jérémy Jacquet and World Cup participants Ryan Gravenberch, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.

Before kick-off, Iraola revealed that Gravenberch, Wirtz and Isak are expected to return for Liverpool's final match of the U.S. tour against Leeds United at Chicago's Soldier Field, provided they complete their fitness work as planned.

Wrexham arrived in New York with confidence after impressive pre-season victories over Manchester United and Leeds United. Phil Parkinson's side, backed by Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, continued to compete well despite suffering a narrow defeat as they build towards another Championship campaign.

Liverpool will conclude their American tour against Leeds before turning their attention to the new domestic season, with Iraola continuing to assess his squad and provide opportunities for several promising academy graduates.
