Liverpool have made a major move in the summer transfer market by agreeing a £116 million deal to sign Germany international Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. The package consists of a guaranteed £100 million and £16 million in performance-related bonuses that could be triggered by the club’s future success. If those add-ons are activated, it would surpass Chelsea’s £107 million signing of Enzo Fernandez and set a new British transfer record.
The 22-year-old midfielder, who played a crucial role in Bayer Leverkusen’s first Bundesliga title win in 2024, had long attracted interest from top European clubs.
Manchester City and Bayern Munich were also linked, but both pulled back due to the financial demands. Wirtz, however, had his sights set on Anfield, and Liverpool were able to negotiate a final fee below Leverkusen’s initial £126 million valuation, securing one of Europe’s most exciting talents.
Wirtz, who debuted for Leverkusen at age 17, leaves the club with 57 goals in 197 appearances and 31 international caps for Germany. His arrival marks Liverpool’s most expensive signing ever, surpassing the fees paid for Darwin Nunez and Virgil van Dijk.
The club also recently signed right-back Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen for £34 million, further strengthening their squad ahead of the new season.
Following their Premier League title win under new manager Arne Slot, Liverpool are continuing their aggressive recruitment strategy. Talks are already underway for Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, with a proposed fee between £45 million and £50 million. After spending conservatively in previous windows, Liverpool now appear ready to reinvest heavily to maintain their domestic dominance and challenge in Europe.
