Lisandro Martinez Slams Manchester United Board After Atletico Madrid Defeat

Posted : 14 October 2026

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has criticised the club's leadership over what he considers insufficient investment in the squad following their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. The Argentine centre-back expressed frustration with the club's recruitment strategy, arguing that United needed more quality additions to compete against Europe's leading teams.

The defeat in Madrid extended United's winless run to five matches across all competitions, increasing pressure on manager Michael Carrick. Speaking after the game, Martinez described the team's performance as disappointing and suggested that the club's struggles reflected deeper problems beyond what happens on the pitch.

Martinez believes United should have strengthened their squad more significantly after finishing third in the Premier League last season and securing a return to European football's premier club competition. He specifically pointed to technical director Jason Wilcox, saying he had expected greater investment during the summer transfer window.

The defender acknowledged that the players must also improve their performances but insisted that building a competitive squad requires the club's leadership to provide sufficient reinforcements. He argued that last season had established a foundation for further progress, yet the opportunity to develop a stronger team had not been fully taken.

Martinez also defended Carrick amid growing speculation about the manager's future. Rather than repeatedly changing coaches, he urged the club to examine other areas of its operation and address the wider issues affecting the team. His remarks suggested that the responsibility for United's disappointing results should not rest solely with the manager or the players.

United's summer recruitment has attracted criticism from supporters, particularly over the failure to strengthen key positions such as striker and left-back. Although the club invested heavily in midfield, concerns remain about whether the squad has enough depth and balance to compete consistently in the Premier League and Champions League. Minority owner Jim Ratcliffe was present at the Metropolitano Stadium to watch the defeat.

Carrick said after the match that he had not watched Martinez's interview and therefore was unable to respond directly to the defender's criticism. He suggested that the comments might have been influenced by the disappointment of the result, while emphasising the need for the team to move forward and prepare for its upcoming fixtures.

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, however, questioned Martinez's decision to speak publicly about the club's internal issues. Rooney acknowledged that the defender's comments demonstrated his concern for the club but argued that such criticism should have been addressed privately. He also suggested that Martinez's own performances could come under scrutiny.

The controversy adds another layer of uncertainty to United's difficult start to the campaign. With pressure mounting on Carrick and questions being raised about the club's transfer strategy, the coming weeks could prove crucial as United attempt to regain consistency and restore confidence among their supporters.
