Inter Miami and Argentine superstar Lionel Messi have reportedly reached an agreement to extend his contract, keeping the 38-year-old at the Major League Soccer (MLS) club beyond next year’s World Cup.
The extension would allow Messi to continue competing at the highest level until after the 2026 tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. His previous deal was set to expire at the end of the 2025 MLS season.
Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 after a challenging spell at Paris Saint-Germain, following an illustrious career at Barcelona, where he spent 17 years and won 10 LaLiga titles along with four UEFA Champions League trophies.
Internationally, Messi has lifted the World Cup with Argentina in 2022 and added two Copa America triumphs in 2021 and 2024, while netting 114 goals for his country. If he competes next year, Messi could appear in a record sixth World Cup, potentially challenging Cristiano Ronaldo’s historic longevity, and move closer to Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 career World Cup goals.
Despite mixed results at Inter Miami in recent tournaments, including defeats in the Leagues Cup final and the Club World Cup last 16, Messi has continued to shine individually. He was named MLS Most Valuable Player in 2024 and became the fastest player to reach 40 goals in MLS history in 2025.
Inter Miami currently sit sixth in the Eastern Conference and remain well-placed for playoff qualification, with games in hand on most rivals. An official announcement regarding Messi’s contract extension is expected within the next two weeks, suggesting the MLS could be the stage where he concludes his remarkable playing career.
