Lionel Messi Set for Emotional Argentina Farewell Against Benin

Posted : 06 October 2026

Lionel Messi is set to make his final appearance for Argentina on Tuesday when the world champions face Benin in a farewell friendly at Buenos Aires’ Monumental Stadium. Around 85,000 supporters are expected to attend as the 39-year-old brings the curtain down on an international career spanning more than two decades.

Messi enters his final Argentina match as the national team’s record appearance-maker and leading scorer, with 207 caps and 125 goals. His career with the Albiceleste includes the 2021 and 2024 Copa América titles, the 2022 Finalissima and, most significantly, Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph.

The farewell will also mark a symbolic change of leadership, with Cristian Romero expected to take over the captain’s armband. Argentina’s emerging generation has already shown promise in Messi’s absence, including impressive wins over Bolivia and Burkina Faso, but coach Lionel Scaloni acknowledges the enormous void left by his captain.

Messi announced his international retirement in August after Argentina’s run to the 2026 World Cup final. He remains under contract with Inter Miami, but his Argentina career will officially conclude against Benin, with the fate of his iconic No. 10 shirt still undecided.
