Lionel Messi Scores Emotional Goal as Inter Miami Draw 2-2 with Philadelphia

Lionel Messi scored his first goal since the death of his father, Jorge, but Inter Miami were held to a 2-2 draw by the Philadelphia Union in MLS on Wednesday.

Philadelphia took the lead through Indiana Vassilev in the 11th minute, but Miami quickly responded. Five minutes later, Messi helped create the equaliser by finding Luis Suarez, whose play set up young American Daniel Pinter for a close-range finish.

Messi then put Inter Miami ahead in the 26th minute with a trademark left-footed effort, curling the ball into the far corner. After briefly celebrating with his teammates, the 39-year-old pointed toward the sky in a touching tribute to his father, who died on August 8 at the age of 68.

The advantage did not last until the final whistle, however. Philadelphia defender Neil Pierre restored parity in the 58th minute, ensuring the hosts claimed a point and leaving Miami frustrated.

The goal was Messi’s 13th in MLS this season, moving him into second place in the league's scoring standings, just one goal behind Dallas forward Petar Musa.

The result extended Inter Miami’s winless run to four matches. The team had previously suffered a 3-2 defeat against León in the Leagues Cup before losing 4-1 to Nashville in MLS, with Messi missing a penalty in that game. Miami are now seven points behind Eastern Conference leaders Nashville.
