Lionel Messi questions football future after father's death

Lionel Messi has admitted he is uncertain about how much longer he will continue playing football following the death of his father, Jorge Messi, at the age of 68. The Argentina captain shared an emotional tribute to his father, who had been his agent and a key figure throughout his career.

Messi revealed that he is struggling to imagine life without his father and questioned whether he can continue his career for much longer. Jorge had been closely involved in Messi's football journey from his earliest days and remained one of his most important advisers.

The forward also reflected on the 2026 World Cup, explaining that his father had encouraged him to play in what became his sixth appearance at the tournament. Messi said he had hoped Argentina would reach the final so Jorge could travel to watch him, but his father's health deteriorated shortly before the competition began.

Argentina eventually reached the final but lost 1-0 to Spain. Messi admitted that he had hoped to win another World Cup trophy and bring it home for his father, but felt he was unable to overcome his physical limits during the final.

Messi has since returned to Inter Miami, where he remains under contract until 2028. However, his latest comments suggest his future in professional football is now uncertain as he comes to terms with his loss.

The football world has rallied around Messi following his tribute. Cristiano Ronaldo sent a message of support to his long-time rival, while Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham also offered his condolences to Messi and his family.
