Lionel Messi has expressed his desire to feature for Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup but says he will only make a decision after assessing his physical readiness. The 38-year-old Inter Miami forward, who led Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, remains eager to defend the title when the Albiceleste take to the field in North America next year.
In an interview with NBC News, Messi revealed that while the dream of playing another World Cup is alive, he will only commit if he feels fully fit. “It’s something extraordinary to be part of a World Cup, and I would love to experience that again,” said the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner. “I’ll evaluate my condition during next year’s preseason with Inter Miami to see if I can be at my best and contribute meaningfully to the national team.”
Messi, who turns 39 in June 2026, emphasized that his decision will depend on how well his body holds up after two decades at the top level of football. “I want to be there if I’m physically ready and can still make a difference,” he added.
The Argentine legend, who began his professional career with Barcelona at the age of 17, went on to join Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 before moving to Major League Soccer in 2023. Reflecting on his current life in Miami, Messi shared his appreciation for the city’s calm atmosphere and quality of life. “Miami has allowed my family and me to enjoy life in a peaceful way,” he said. “Of course, we miss Barcelona—it’s where I grew up—but here we have the space to live quietly and let the kids be themselves.”
Having represented Argentina 195 times and scored 114 goals, Messi remains one of the most influential players in football history. As Argentina prepare for their title defense, fans around the world will be eagerly waiting to see if their captain will make one final appearance on the sport’s biggest stage.
