Lionel Messi Eyes Club Ownership, Not Coaching, After Playing Career

Posted : 07 January 2026

Inter Miami CF captain Lionel Messi has ruled out a future in coaching, saying he is more interested in owning and building his own club after his playing career ends. In an interview with Argentine streaming channel Luzu TV aired Tuesday, Messi explained his vision for post-retirement football involvement.

“I don’t see myself as a coach,” Messi said. “I like the idea of being a manager, but I’d prefer to be an owner. I’d like to have my own club, start from the bottom, and help it grow. To give kids the opportunity to develop and achieve something important—that appeals to me the most.”

Messi, who recently extended his contract with Inter Miami through the 2028 MLS season, has already explored football ownership. He partnered with longtime teammate Luis Suárez to launch Deportivo LSM, a Uruguayan fourth-division team. The club—whose initials stand for Luis Suárez and Messi—employs 80 professionals and has over 3,000 members.

“Deportivo LS is a family dream that began in 2018. We have grown a lot with more than 3,000 members,” Suárez said. “I want to offer Uruguayan soccer, the place I love and where I grew up, opportunities and tools for teenagers and children to grow.”

Suárez initially started the project and later invited Messi to join. Messi expressed his excitement about the collaboration: “I’m proud and happy that you chose me, so I hope to contribute everything I can to continue growing and, above all, be by your side in this.”

In addition, Messi recently launched the Messi Cup, an under-16 youth tournament in Miami designed to develop talent and foster competition among academy teams from around the world. River Plate won the inaugural edition in December, defeating Atlético Madrid in the final.

For now, Messi remains focused on his playing career with Inter Miami. The defending MLS Cup champions will open their 2026 campaign on February 21 with an away match against LAFC.
