Lionel Messi Admits He Already Misses Argentina Jersey After Retirement

Posted : 08 October 2026

Less than a day after ending his Argentina career, Lionel Messi said he already misses wearing the national team jersey.

Messi brought his international career to a close on Tuesday as Argentina defeated Benin 3-0 in Buenos Aires. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner scored from the penalty spot during what marked his farewell appearance on home soil.

Following the match, Messi described his retirement as the “saddest day of my career.” However, despite the emotional nature of his decision, the Argentina captain said he believes stepping away from international football is the right choice.

“Yesterday was my last match and I'm already missing the light blue and white jersey,” Messi wrote on social media. He added that he was confident he was making the correct decision.

Messi leaves the Argentina national team as its all-time leading scorer, having found the net 126 times. He also holds the record for appearances, with 208 caps, while his 70 assists are the most recorded by an Argentina player.

Reflecting on his international career, Messi described it as an extraordinary journey that included both memorable highs and difficult moments. He thanked his family and teammates for their support and also paid tribute to the late Diego Maradona, another iconic figure in Argentine football.
