Lille are considering legal action following a serious injury to defender Tiago Santos during their Ligue 1 encounter with Le Havre on Saturday. The 24-year-old Portuguese right-back suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and a meniscus tear in his right knee after a challenge by Le Havre midfielder Amir Richardson. Santos was carried off on a stretcher during Lille’s 1-0 victory and is expected to miss several months.
Lille have questioned the decision not to issue Richardson a yellow or red card after the referee awarded a foul for the challenge. The club considers the tackle dangerous and uncontrolled, arguing that its execution from behind warranted a dismissal. Lille have asked the French Football Federation and the Professional Football League to examine the incident and the officials’ handling of the video review.
In a statement, Lille said the severity of the injury, combined with the absence of further disciplinary action, raised serious concerns. The club confirmed that it was assessing its legal options and reserved the right to pursue compensation for the consequences of the incident.
Le Havre responded by expressing sympathy for Santos and wishing him a full recovery. However, the club defended Richardson, pointing out that neither the match referee nor the video assistant referee considered the challenge worthy of additional punishment. Le Havre also questioned Lille’s attempt to seek retrospective disciplinary action, arguing that such a move would fall outside the current regulations.
The incident has reignited debate over refereeing decisions and accountability when serious injuries result from on-field challenges. While Lille seek further examination of the tackle, the competing positions of the two clubs leave the matter unresolved.
Santos’s absence represents a significant setback for Lille, who are second in Ligue 1 and preparing for their Champions League meeting with Arsenal in London. The defender previously suffered an ACL injury to his left knee in 2024, making his latest setback another major obstacle in his career.
