Lewis Koumas Shines for Liverpool With Historic Champions League Performance

Posted : 17 October 2026

Lewis Koumas has given Liverpool another reason to celebrate after delivering a memorable performance in their 6-3 Champions League victory over LASK in Austria. The 21-year-old Wales international scored and provided an assist, becoming the youngest Liverpool player to achieve both feats in a Champions League match.

Koumas surpassed the previous record held by club legend Steven Gerrard, who achieved the same milestone in 2001. The forward initially had two goals ruled out for offside before finally finding the net on his third attempt, capping an impressive display at the Raiffeisen Arena.

His breakthrough comes after an important week for the young attacker. Koumas made his first Premier League start against Manchester City just three days earlier, taking advantage of injuries to key Liverpool forwards Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo and Hugo Ekitike.

The youngster was particularly disappointed after missing a scoring opportunity in the goalless draw against Manchester City. He admitted that the missed chance kept him awake that night, but his performance against LASK provided an immediate response.

Koumas joined Liverpool's academy at the age of 11 and made his senior debut under former manager Jürgen Klopp when he was 18. He gained valuable experience through loan spells at Stoke City, Birmingham City and Hull City, helping Hull secure promotion last season.

Despite those temporary departures, Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola decided during pre-season that Koumas would remain part of his first-team plans. The forward has since made his Premier League debut, featured in the Champions League and impressed during his first start of the season against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup.

Iraola previously praised Koumas's energetic playing style, describing it as contagious. His performances have also demonstrated that the club's academy continues to provide a pathway into senior football.

Koumas celebrated his first goal of the season against LASK by acknowledging the travelling Liverpool supporters. He described the moment as the best feeling of his career and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent the first team.

The forward remains aware that his current opportunities could change when Liverpool's injured attackers return. However, he insists that he must continue working hard and take advantage of every chance he receives.

Liverpool's academy staff have also highlighted the importance of Koumas's progress. Academy boss Rob Page pointed to the emergence of young players such as Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni as evidence that talented prospects can earn opportunities under Iraola.

Page also praised the connection between the first team and the academy, noting that the manager's playing philosophy suits several young players. Liverpool's under-19 side reinforced that progress by defeating LASK's youth team 4-2 in the UEFA Youth League, with Will Wright scoring a hat-trick.

Koumas could make another start when Liverpool travel to Brentford on Saturday. Iraola had yet to confirm whether Isak or Gakpo would be available, leaving the Welsh forward in contention to continue leading the attack.

His latest performance has strengthened his position in the squad and offered Liverpool supporters an encouraging story amid their injury concerns. Koumas now faces the challenge of maintaining his form and turning a promising opportunity into a sustained first-team career.
