Lewandowski Set for Return as Barcelona Eyes Title in Espanyol Derby

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski is poised to return to the pitch for Thursday’s LaLiga derby against Espanyol, according to manager Hansi Flick. The Catalan side is on the verge of securing the league title, sitting seven points ahead of their closest rivals with 82 points.

 

 If Real Madrid drop points at Mallorca on Wednesday, Barcelona could be crowned champions even before kickoff. A win against city rivals Espanyol would mathematically seal the title for Flick’s team.

 

Lewandowski has been sidelined for the past three league matches and also missed Barcelona’s 3-2 Copa del Rey final victory over Real Madrid on April 27 due to a muscle issue. Despite his absence, the 36-year-old remains a key figure in the team, having scored 25 goals in 31 league appearances this season.

 

He trails Kylian Mbappé by just two goals in the race for the LaLiga Golden Boot, with both players having played the same number of games.

 

The Polish striker made a brief 30-minute appearance during Barcelona’s Champions League semifinal second-leg loss to Inter Milan and did not feature in their dramatic 4-3 win over Real Madrid last weekend.

 

That result marked Barcelona's fourth win over their arch-rivals across all competitions this season, a feat that Flick praised as a testament to the team's tactical discipline and pressing intensity. He expressed pride in his players for limiting Real's presence in Barcelona’s half for nearly half an hour of that match.

 

Flick also shared his thoughts on Carlo Ancelotti’s upcoming departure from Real Madrid to take over Brazil’s national team. Reflecting on Ancelotti’s time in Spain, Flick called him one of the most respected and successful coaches in world football. He wished the Italian manager well in his next chapter, expressing confidence that Ancelotti would thrive with the Brazilian squad and continue his legacy of success.
