Lens Make History with First French Cup Triumph After Victory Over Nice

Posted : 23 May 2026

RC Lens secured the first French Cup title in the club’s history after defeating OGC Nice 3-1 in the final at the Stade de France on Friday night.

Former France international Florian Thauvin played a decisive role in the victory, scoring the opening goal before providing the assist for Odsonne Edouard as Lens established a two-goal advantage before halftime.

Thauvin broke the deadlock midway through the opening half with a powerful finish that lifted the atmosphere among the large Lens support inside the stadium. Shortly afterwards, his corner delivery was headed into the net by former Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard to make it 2-0.

Nice responded just before the break through teenage forward Djibril Coulibaly, who scored his first senior goal to bring his side back into the contest.

The second half saw Nice push aggressively for an equaliser and they came close on multiple occasions, striking the woodwork twice as Lens struggled to regain control of the game.

However, Lens eventually sealed the win in the 78th minute when substitute Abdallah Sima reacted quickest inside the penalty area to score the decisive third goal, sparking celebrations among players and supporters.

The cup success completes a remarkable season for Lens under coach Pierre Sage. The club also finished second in Ligue 1 behind Paris Saint-Germain, securing qualification for next season’s Champions League.

Lens had previously lost all three of their earlier French Cup final appearances, with their last appearance coming in 1998 — the same year they won the French league title for the first and only time.

Speaking after the victory, Thauvin described the achievement as historic and praised the squad for producing one of the most memorable seasons in the club’s history.

For Nice, the defeat adds further disappointment to a difficult campaign. The club must now focus on a relegation play-off against Saint-Etienne to preserve their place in France’s top division.
