Germany have suffered a setback ahead of the World Cup after teenage forward Lennart Karl was ruled out of the tournament with a training injury. The German Football Federation (DFB) announced on Friday that the 18-year-old Bayern Munich player tore a muscle bundle during the team's final training session.
"Lenny tore a muscle bundle today in the final training session and is ruled out because of this injury. Have a good recovery, we're thinking of you," the DFB said in a statement posted on Instagram.
Head coach, Julian Nagelsmann revealed earlier in Chicago that Karl's injury appeared serious. Speaking before Saturday's friendly against the United States, Nagelsmann said the player had been taken to hospital for scans and admitted that the situation "didn't look good."
Karl's absence is a significant blow for Germany. The teenager emerged as one of the Bundesliga's breakthrough players this season, making his top-flight debut and quickly becoming an important member of Bayern Munich 's title-winning side under Vincent Kompany.
He also made an immediate impression at international level. Karl started his first match for Germany in a 4-0 victory over Finland on Sunday and provided an assist during the match.
Nagelsmann confirmed that the 40-year-old would not be available for the friendly against the United States, though there is optimism he will be fit for Germany's opening World Cup fixture against Curacao on 14 June.
Neuer, who won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, was unexpectedly recalled to the national team in May despite having announced his international retirement nearly two years earlier. Nagelsmann expressed confidence in the goalkeeper's experience and readiness for major tournaments.
"At his age, he doesn't need a warm-up phase. He knows how to handle high-pressure situations," Nagelsmann said. "He's on his way to peak fitness. However, we don't want to take any risks tomorrow."
While Germany hope Neuer will soon be available, Karl's injury means one of the country's brightest young talents will miss the chance to make his mark on the World Cup stage.
