Lazio Join Inter Milan at Serie A Summit as Rivals Drop Points

Posted : 12 October 2026

Lazio moved level on points with Inter Milan at the top of Serie A with a 3–1 victory over Monza on Sunday, while title hopefuls Roma, Juventus and AC Milan all dropped points.

Roma were held to a 0–0 draw away to Como after Donyell Malen was sent off, leaving them two points behind the leaders in third place. AC Milan drew 1–1 at Sassuolo to remain four points off the top in fourth, while surprise package Cagliari held Juventus to a 1–1 draw to maintain their impressive start to the season.

Under Gennaro Gattuso, Lazio continued their strong form, securing their fifth victory in six matches to reach 16 points and join Inter, who defeated Parma 3–0 at the San Siro on Saturday. Lazio remain unbeaten in the league.

“We can’t look at the standings, otherwise we will get dizzy. We have to take it day by day,” Gattuso said.

Lazio’s impressive run has come despite ongoing fan protests against owner Claudio Lotito, which have resulted in sparse attendances at home matches amid a stadium boycott.

Nuno Tavares gave Lazio the lead in the third minute with a spectacular long-range strike, before Gustav Isaksen doubled their advantage midway through the first half.

Monza’s task became more difficult when Lorenzo Lucchesi was sent off in the 35th minute for bringing down Tijjani Noslin as he broke through on goal. However, the visitors, who sit 16th, responded strongly after the break, pulling a goal back and coming close to equalising before Lazio secured a third goal in the closing stages.

Tempers Flare as Juventus Rescue a Point

In Sardinia, Juventus needed a late equaliser from Randal Kolo Muani to rescue a point after Daniel Maldini had given Cagliari the lead, while tempers flared between the two coaches after the final whistle.

Maldini, the son of AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini, scored for the fourth consecutive game midway through the first half, marking his 25th birthday in style.

Juventus dominated possession but struggled to create clear-cut chances against a Cagliari side boasting one of the league’s strongest defensive records. However, Kolo Muani headed home in the 81st minute to level the score.

The France international nearly completed the comeback four minutes later when his close-range effort struck the underside of the crossbar. Cagliari held on for a draw, but the contest ended in controversy as opposing coaches Fabio Pisacane and Luciano Spalletti were shown red cards following a verbal altercation.

“Nothing happened. I told him they play good football and are good at wasting time,” Spalletti explained when asked about the incident.

“Pisacane said, ‘What do you mean, wasting time?’ And they kicked us both out. It was nothing major, all pretty normal,” he added.

Milan Drop More Points Against Sassuolo

AC Milan maintained their unbeaten start to the season but were held to a draw for the third time in their last four league matches.

Defender Matteo Gabbia was forced off with an injury early in the game, while the breakthrough did not arrive until the 63rd minute. Luka Modric played Adrien Rabiot through, allowing the French midfielder to fire home a powerful finish and give Milan the lead.

However, their advantage lasted just five minutes before substitute Cas Odenthal equalised from a corner, finding the net in a crowded penalty area.

“We deserved to take the lead, but then after the goal we didn’t control the game,” Milan coach Rúben Amorim said.

“When we had the ball, we lost it really fast. That can happen, but what cannot happen is to concede that goal on the corner.”

Ten-Man Roma Held by Como

Roma maintained their unbeaten start to the season but could only manage a point in a goalless draw away to Como, the first 0–0 result of the Serie A campaign.

The dismissal of league top scorer Donyell Malen for a dangerous tackle early in the second half forced Roma to scale back their attacking ambitions after a promising opening period.

Lorenzo Pellegrini struck the post, while Paulo Dybala missed a good opportunity as Roma sought to take control before the dismissal changed the complexion of the match.

Como increased the pressure after gaining a numerical advantage, but Roma goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini produced important saves to preserve the clean sheet.

Neither side could find a breakthrough in a meeting between two teams regarded as potential challengers near the top of the table. The result left Roma two points behind leaders Inter and Lazio.

Meanwhile, Bologna secured their first victory of the season with a 2–1 win over Lecce, adding another result to an eventful round of fixtures in Italy’s top flight.
