Late Kareem Strike Dents Edo Queens’ Hopes at Gov. Diri Pre-Season

Posted : 07 October 2026

Edo Queens FC were left frustrated after a late goal condemned them to a 1–0 defeat against Bayelsa Queens FC in a fiercely contested encounter at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa.

The result leaves Edo Queens with four points from three matches in the Governor Douye Diri Women’s Pre-season Football Tournament, having recorded one win, one draw and one defeat.

Both sides approached the encounter with caution and intensity, reflecting the growing rivalry between the two Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) clubs.

Bayelsa Queens, known as the Prosperity Girls, eventually found the breakthrough in the 86th minute when Kareem Ramata converted a crucial opportunity to hand her side victory.

Edo Queens, however, could feel hard done by the result after creating several promising opportunities, particularly in the first half.

The Benin-based side failed to convert their chances as Bayelsa Queens’ defence remained composed under sustained pressure.

The encounter was characterised by tactical discipline, physical intensity and moments of individual brilliance, with neither side willing to give the other an easy route to goal.

For Edo Queens coach Moses Aduku and his technical crew, the tournament continues to serve as an important platform for assessing the squad ahead of the new NWFL season.

The coaching staff have used the competition to test established players alongside new recruits and assess their readiness for the challenges of the upcoming campaign.

Despite the defeat, Edo Queens’ determined performance provided positives for the technical crew as preparations continue.

Bayelsa Queens now have seven points from three matches, while Delta Queens lead the group with eight points. C2E Sports Academy of Abia have three points, with Imo Strikers yet to register a point.

Edo Queens will complete their group-stage campaign on Thursday against Imo Strikers, before returning to Benin to continue preparations for the new season.
