Heartland FC Technical Manager Emmanuel Amuneke praised his players’ persistence after the Naze Millionaires secured a dramatic 1–0 victory over Sunshine Stars in their Nigeria National League Match Day 11 encounter at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.
A late goal from Abdulateef Ibrahim settled a tense contest that saw the hosts dominate proceedings but struggle to break down a disciplined Sunshine Stars defence for most of the game.
Heartland started brightly and nearly opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Udochukwu Anumudu delivered a dangerous corner which Francis Erikan met with a powerful header, but the effort narrowly missed the target.
Moments later, the hosts were forced into an early change after Oji Egwu picked up an injury, with Uchenna Odeh coming on in the 25th minute.
Despite controlling possession and creating the better chances, Heartland’s inability to convert opportunities meant the first half ended goalless.
Their best opportunity arrived in stoppage time when Usman Umar found himself unmarked six yards from goal but fired straight at Sunshine Stars goalkeeper Olaide Okanlawon.
Seconds later, another opportunity slipped away after Okanlawon fumbled a routine shot, but a Heartland player lost his footing at the crucial moment while attempting to convert the rebound.
Heartland resumed the second half with renewed urgency. In the 55th minute, Francis Erikan’s free kick from about 25 yards forced Okanlawon into a smart save to keep the visitors level.
The home side continued to press and nearly broke the deadlock four minutes later, but Uchenna Odeh failed to properly connect with a header from a corner kick.
In search of greater attacking spark, Heartland made tactical substitutions in the 66th minute, introducing Hadi Mohammed and Akuka Chizaram for Jonathan Osondu and Umar Usman.
The changes injected fresh energy into the hosts’ attack as they increased pressure on the Sunshine Stars defence in the closing stages.
With time running out, Abdulateef Ibrahim and Ali Sunday were introduced in the 82nd minute as Heartland intensified their push for a decisive goal.
Their persistence eventually paid off in the 90th minute when Christian Nkwo delivered a dangerous cross into the Sunshine Stars penalty area.
The ball evaded several defenders before falling to Hadi Mohammed, whose initial effort was parried by Okanlawon. Abdulateef Ibrahim reacted quickest to the loose ball, stabbing home the rebound from close range to send the home supporters into wild celebration.
Heartland held firm in the closing moments to secure a crucial victory.
Speaking after the match, Amuneke commended his players for their determination against a stubborn opponent.
“We played a very good and organised side. We were very persistent for us to win the game,” Amuneke said.
The former Super Eagles international noted that his team’s control of the game eventually paid dividends.
“We controlled the game throughout, and this gave us more edge while going for attack. Had we continued with the long balls, which they won for most part of the game, it wouldn’t have paid off.”
Amuneke also admitted his side should have put the game beyond doubt earlier.
“We could have buried this game in the first half, but we were not able to take our chances. We are grateful for the one we eventually got,” he added.
The coach further explained that the win achieved one of the club’s short-term objectives.
“We knew from the beginning that a time would come when we would have three home fixtures consecutively, and our objective was to win those games. Now that has come to pass.”
He encouraged supporters to savour the moment following the emotional victory.
“We shall enjoy this moment because it was a very intense and emotional game, and our fans can celebrate.”
Attention, however, quickly shifts to their next league assignment.
“We shall start thinking about Inter Lagos from Monday. We know they have an edge over us, but in life nothing is impossible.”
The result moves Heartland FC to third place on the league table with 20 points from 12 matches as they prepare for a crucial clash against Inter Lagos at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos, this weekend.
