Last gap goals earn 10-men Plateau United FC win over hard-fighting Rivers United FC

Posted : 11 January 2024

It was an ecstatic moment as Plateau United FC's Yakubu Adams saved his team from dropping a home point against a more resolute Rivers United FC in a rescheduled 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 10 that ended 3-2.

Recall that Rivers United, Nigeria's only representatives at the CAF tournament, are campaigning in the ongoing 2023/2024 CAF Confederation Cup; hence, the Pride of Rivers has missed some of the domestic league actions, including the Match Day 10 against Plateau United FC.

However, the last-gasp winner by Yakubu Adams was just the tonic the lads and fans needed as Rivers United FC gave the homers a good fight. They fought valiantly and gallantly, but the industry of the Peace Boys came victorious despite going one man down.

Plateau United FC's Moses Adikwu was sent off for a second bookable offence after a handball in the box following Itodo’s throw in the 72nd minute.

The 10-man Plateau United, in spite of the setback, defeated Rivers United FC in a five-goal thriller at the Jos City Stadium.

The visitors were the first to find the back of the net as Andy Okpe opened scoring, converting from the spot in the 26th minute after the referee adjudged a handball incident against Moses Adikwu.

In-form attacking sensation Albert Hillary also restored parity from the spot two minutes before half-time for his ninth goal of the season.

At the restart, the hosts took the lead in the 54th minute via Muhammed Umar before Endurance Ebedeberi drew level in the 64th minute from the spot for Rivers United.

With 16 minutes left on the clock, the hosts were reduced to 10 men after Moses Adikwu was sent off for a second bookable offense, handling the ball in his attempt to convert Daniel Itodo's throw.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Plateau United got the winner with three minutes left in regulation time. Yakubu Adams fired a rocket into the net from outside the box for the hosts, who held on to secure the victory.

Rivers United will now turn their attention to their next game in Port Harcourt as they host Akwa United, while Plateau United welcome Enyimba International.
