Lampard Explains Why Awoniyi Left Nottingham Forest for Coventry City

Posted : 20 August 2026

Frank Lampard has revealed that Taiwo Awoniyi’s desire for regular playing time was a major reason behind his move from Nottingham Forest to Coventry City. The Nigerian striker joined Coventry during the summer transfer window as the newly promoted club strengthened its squad for the 2026/27 Premier League season.

Lampard said Coventry were aware that Awoniyi wanted more minutes after a difficult period at Forest. The former Chelsea manager believes that hunger could become an important advantage for the 29-year-old forward.

“There is a reason why Taiwo left Nottingham Forest and come to us,” Lampard said. “We really like him and hope he’s going to be great for us.” He added that he likes players who are hungry to play and want to become important figures in the team.

Awoniyi made 17 Premier League appearances for Forest last season, but only three of those outings were starts. He finished the campaign with four league goals and one assist from 494 minutes, underlining the limited opportunities he received.

The Nigerian forward had also faced strong competition for attacking positions at Forest. His limited role meant he was unable to build the consistent run of matches needed to establish himself as a regular starter.

Lampard explained that Coventry's recruitment strategy made Awoniyi an attractive option. The manager pointed to the striker’s Premier League experience, physical strength and ability to hold up the ball as qualities that can improve his new team's attacking options.

Awoniyi spent four seasons with Forest after arriving from Union Berlin in 2022. He made 103 appearances for the club and scored 23 goals, including 11 goals during his first Premier League season at the City Ground.

His move to Coventry reportedly cost around £9m. The transfer gives Awoniyi a fresh opportunity to play a bigger role under Lampard, while Coventry have added an experienced Premier League forward to their squad.

Coventry secured promotion to the Premier League after winning the Championship last season. The Sky Blues are now preparing for their first top-flight campaign in 25 years, with their opening fixture coming away against reigning champions Arsenal on August 21.

Awoniyi will be expected to compete for a leading role in Lampard’s attack. With regular football now a central part of his decision to leave Forest, the Nigeria international will hope to repay his new manager’s confidence and rediscover the form that made him a key figure at Forest.
